Judo
Judo – An international sport has its roots in 1882 Japan. Judo was developed by Jigoro Kano as a form of self-defense as well as a sport. Jigoro Kano was a jujitsu practitioner of the classical styles of Kito-ryu and Tenshin-ryu jujitsu. Jigoro Kano saw Judo as a form of exercise to be used in the Japenese public schools system. Kano saw that Jujitsu competitions often resulted in severe injuries. To reduce injuries during competition all strikes and most of the joint-locking techniques were removed. Kano’s desire was that judo's purpose was not to win competitions, but to perfect one's mind and body. Judo was known first as Kano Jujitsu and then Kano Judo.
Some Judo terms are ukemi (falling techniques), nage waze (throwing techniques), ne waza (ground techniques), and atemi waza (vital point techniques).
