Aikido

Aikido - “the way of harmony” is an unarmed method of self-defense developed by Morihei Ueshiba in 1942. He blended his martial skills, religious beliefs and Zen meditation together. Aikido is based on the principles of harmony and nonresistance to the opponent. It is noncombative as well as noncompetitive.

The founder Moreshi Usshiba, trained in Daito-ryu jujitsu. He only learned the first one hundred techniques, not the entire curriculum. He combined with techniques from other schools to create aikido.

Aikido has many branches. It can be practiced gently for exercise, health, or for its religious aspects. There is also a hard style stressing aiki aspect of Daito (the striking and bone breaking technique).
